About Heritage Forest

Heritage Forest covers a vast area predominantly made up of old-growth Douglas fir, western hemlock, and cedar trees, representing one of the state’s most ecologically significant forest tracts. The forest’s topography includes gently rolling hills and steep-sided river valleys shaped by the Clackamas and Sandy Rivers, providing both lowland and upland habitats. The area hosts numerous species including northern spotted owls, Roosevelt elk, and Pacific giant salamanders, offering exceptional wildlife viewing chances. Historically, the forest was part of the traditional homelands of the Molalla and Clackamas Tribes, who valued the region for its rich natural resources and cultural significance. Established as a protected area in the 1990s to conserve remaining old-growth stands and prevent logging, Heritage Forest has since become a favored recreation destination. Visitors can explore extensive hiking and mountain biking trails, fish in the pristine rivers, or camp in peaceful natural settings. Notable landmarks within the forest include the Sandy River Gorge and the historic Bartholomew Trail, an old pack route that dates back to pioneer days. Heritage Forest is especially popular among families, hikers, and wildlife photographers seeking a quiet forest experience close to the Portland metropolitan area. Its mixture of rugged wilderness and accessible trails allows for both challenging adventures and leisurely day trips throughout the year.
